The Church of Allen Stone

Allen Stone and his take on soul music has been on the tip of everybody’s tongues in the music industry lately, especially here in Seattle. With sold out shows at The Neptune Theater in January, and a Spring tour coming together, Allen is on the cusp of being the buzz nationwide. When we saw he had a show booked at the Treehouse Cafe on Bainbridge Island this past Friday, we decided we better jump at the chance to see him up close and personal while we still could.

With room for only about 200 people in the music venue, we were soon squeezing up to the stage to make room for all the ticket holders. This was going to be an intimate performance, that was certain! Getting to the Treehouse Cafe takes some commitment – a ferry and cab ride if you’re coming from the mainland – so we were looking forward to being with an attentive and enthusiastic crowd. It was clear right off the bat that Allen had picked up the same vibe, as he soon had the room bouncing – including a dance-off between each side of the room.

We had a chance to take a breather and wipe the sweat out of our eyes mid-set before Allen came back on to get us moving again with more of his own songs, plus his take on Bob Marley’s Is This Love, and crowd singalong, What’ s Going On, by Marvin Gaye.

By the end of the set, we felt like we were witness to a revival and had become disciples of the church of Allen Stone, ready to spread the word of his energetic, greasy, soul sound. Genuinely appreciative, he hung out long after the show to chat with fans.
